Question for Music Lovers or anyone else

If you and I were to go to a (insert music store of choice) together, what is one CD that you would just insist I get?

Doesn't matter the genre, the only things I don't care for are gangsta rap and thrash metal. Otherwise alls fair.

No this is not a meme, it's an honest question. I have found in the last couple weeks that I do not have enough music, especially new music. I've been listening to the same stuff (tho I love it, everything does get old after awhile) and would like some new stuff. There are tons of CD's I've wanted for ages, I think it's time to start spending time on half.com or something.

I like Keane, The Killers, and the Postal Service.

Also, I always love Matthew Sweet and the Violent Femmes.

The Killers is definately one I've wanted to check out. Don't think I've heard of the others tho

considering how long I know you've like The Rev, I'm really surprised I've not checked him out...

I think I still have a bazillion of your Rev Horton Heat CDs. Or maybe it's Rollins... I know I have a stack of one or the other. Somewhere...

I'll second the Medieval Baebes. I saw them at Lilith Fair back in the day and they were awesome.

Played at Lilith Fair huh? Maybe I will check them out...

I have some of their music that Duncan gave to me. Remind me of it the next time I see you, and I'll share. :)

Well, honestly I've been stuck on the Rent Soundtrack for 4 months, so I've overplayed myself on it. Most of the other stuff I just haven't added new spice. as much as I love music I have to have variety to keep me going. :)

How 'bout K.D. Lang's Hymn's of the 49th Paralell? I've been in love with that album ever since I bought for [livejournal.com profile] wooisme back in Micigan and I still love listening to it.

[identity profile] stormdog.livejournal.com 2006-02-19 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Ack. That apostrophe should not be in that title. I'm slightly embarrassed.

[identity profile] datahawk.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
K.D. Lang huh? what little I've heard of her stuff hasn't really drawn me in, maybe I should listen to it some time when I'm over.

[identity profile] stormdog.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I like Hymns more than her other albums. It's a bit different in feel I think, and it's also all (all but one anyway) covers of songs by other Canadian artists. Her takes on Leonard Cohen are fabulous. I'm sure Moira would be happy to let you have a listen or borrow it for a time.

Feren and Poe turned me on to Juno Reactor a few years ago. 'Bible of Dreams' is very good.

[identity profile] datahawk.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
never heard of him... maybe I'll check that out

I would suggest finding a music store where a salesperson doesn't blink when you ask for music in the genre, "Something that hurts my brain."

Then start placing random words together, and see what the clerk suggests.

"Angry German Men singing Sinatra" netted me Einstürzende Neubauten's Strategies Against Architecture, which does include a German industrial band doing a Nancy Sinatra cover, "Sand." Very nice.

"A black man singing a white man's songs" earned me The Persuasions' Frankly A Capella, in which a doo-wop group sings Frank Zappa. Including two pieces which were originally instrumental.

Tom Waits, Ghost of the Robot (James Marsters band.), and Fiona Apple.

[identity profile] datahawk.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard some of Ghost of the Robot's stuff, really should pick up some of their stuff. Tom Waits..I thought someone else suggested them, but now I don't remember. I've heard some of Fiona Apples stuff, but not enough to form an opinion on. thanks babe

Hmm...music for Data?

Albums:

Semisonic - Feeling Strangely Fine

Matthew Sweet in general.

And, one of my all time favorite bands, Gomez.

[identity profile] datahawk.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard you mention Gomez, I've had multiple suggestions on Matthew Sweet..very interesting..

Does it count if you can't find the CD in most music stores? If so, my vote would be for anything by Heather Alexander (http://www.heatherlands.com/index.php?section=1). I'm particularly a fan of Enchantment, Life's Flame, and Midsummer.

[identity profile] datahawk.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
eh, that counts. Most of the bands I generally listen to you can't find their cd's in a best buy or sam goody.

[identity profile] datahawk.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not a case of underappreciated bands, it's just more of a 'Hey you may have heard of them, but you don't have them! Get them!' thing too.

[identity profile] datahawk.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, not sure what I think of her...

[identity profile] duncandahusky.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Playing to your tastes, I'd recommend Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span, if you don't already have any of their stuff. Also, Kila is really interesting - I'm just starting to tap into their stuff. In a folk-pop vein, Canada's Sarah Harmer has a truly lovely voice (I love the song "Escarpment Blues" off her most recent album) - I need to grab her albums.

Also, check out Pandora - you put in a band you like, and it recommends other bands that have a similar sound.

[identity profile] cyohtee.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm...

Michelle Branch

Evanessence

Bare Naked Ladies

Blackmoore's Night

Black 47

Poe

Godhead

Moxy FruvousWi

Within Temptation

Just to name a few... :)

[identity profile] cyohtee.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, just Moxy Fruvous, not Moxy FruvousWi... (if only you could edit your own comments) :)

I am so obsessed with Shawn Mullins right now, so that's the one I'd suggest.

Otherwise: Mat Kearney, Florez, Sister Hazel, and Train are the ones that are rotating through my CD player.

Besides the ones that you already own a copy of. ;)

I bought a 60 gig external hard drive last weekend, and have already filled about 10 gigs with nothing but music. And that's only the music that I already had mp3'd for one reason or another or that I've gotten from other people in mp3 format. I haven't even STARTED mp3'ing my CD collection yet.
