Gotta admit, I'm a little offended...

I'm tired of the remakes...

So, they remade Hairspray. WHY? WHY? WHY? Divine is divine and no one can replace her. Yet John Travolta tries? Bah. My love for plus size positive movies may out weight my choice to skip this.

They made Get Smart the movie. WHY? WHY? WHY? Which is what I was thinking, if I didn't actually say it when I saw the preview. I enjoyed the show when I was a kid. I haven't watched it in years. I may see it, the preview made me laugh.

They are remaking Ferris Buellers Day Off. WHY? WHY? WHY? It's a cult classic. It's not a special effects movie. There is nothing new to be brought to it. I will not see this if it makes it to completion. Much like I refused to see the remake of Miracle on 34th Street.

Hollywood needs to quit spending the money on the drugs and spend it on some writers who do something other then rehash classics.

Hollywood is afraid of technology that isn't used to create all that eye candy they seem to be so big on. If they would just pull their heads out of the sand they might find that there's a lot of original thinking people out there on the net doing their own thing.

Hollywood has lost it's glamor and have become so political anymore that it's just too painful to watch. Ah well... more important things to do than to watch movies. Like pull my peach cobbler out of the oven before it burns. :P

I want to see the Get Smart movie. If it is anything remake wise of Police Squad [tv show] and the Naked Gun movies, it might still be good. I don't think it is so bad to take an older hit show and make a few movies out of it, like very long episodes modernized.

I wish they would do more Naked Gun movies.

To be fair, the Charlies Angels movies were pretty good. But that was a shot in the dark. Then you have your Dukes of Hazards and the like and you realize not ALL old TV shows should hit the big screen.

I have to admit, I don't even want to run a theory on why Holllywood is as useless as it is now. I just wish plus positive movies like Phat Girlz don't have to be so far off the market or indie to be made.

And the only thing more important then movies is music...ok at least in my world. :D

I had a super strong urge to punch Ferris in the snoot. Or dump him in some quick setting cement.

Ben Stein was the one I really had empathy for in that movie. I knew what Smoot Hawley was.

Sci-Fi is doing a science-fantasy remake of The Wizard of Oz called "Tin Man" and they appear to be doing a remake of Flash Gordon as well. BSG gives me some hope that it can be done well, they might have new freshness, topicality, and insight. A properly remade classic can be FANTASTIC. On the other hand, poorly remade classics can suck like nothing else.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I will probably see Hairspray out of morbid curiosity, that and seeing John Trovolta in a dress has gotta be good for a few laughs.

One movie remake recently that rawked however...Transformers. Hells yes.

I realize the character is pretty out there in general, but I can't take John seriously in that roll.

And I'm a heathen of my generation, I have no interest in seeing Transformers. :)

Movies that aren't remakes so much as a different take on things don't bother me. And movies that are remakes that are tech/effects heavy don't bother me as much. I fully expect, in about 30 years to see full remakes of the Harry Potter movies. Why? cause the effects will have changed so much that they will feel the need to show 'what should really have been done'. It's the ones like Ferris that piss me off. It was the actors and what THEY put into it that made it a cult classic.

heh, it's more the point. I didn't say you had to like the movie. I'm tired of non tech/effects based movies being remade. It would be like remaking Rocky Horror. Insulting.

The charm of the movie (for those who like it) is the people who played the characters. Seriously. Alan Ruck? Matthew Brodrick? Ben Stein? They are what made the movie. A remake is all out insulting.

Yeah I can see that. Good remakes should stand on their own, bad ones just keep reminding you of the original.

Special effects remakes can be OK, but I hate when they do things like turn the guns in E.T. into walkie talkies.

Just last weekend, RC and a friend went to go look for Ferris Bueller scenes in Northbrook and other surrounding places. This new movie will never have the charm and innocence that the original one did.

Watch it be filmed in some Naperville-Yuppie-Pretty People town now @.@

Well, it helped to be the same age as the characters in the movie, aspiring to similar levels of insufferable smartassitude as him. :)

I'm sure that this plays into the reasons for the remake-- Ferris was made before the current crop of teenagers were even born, so I'm guessing it's about as relevant to them as I would find... I don't know, Gidget? :) I still find the remake idea as offensive as Data does. So when will the new version of The Graduate come out, starring Ashton Kutcher? :)

What about going to MarineWorld instead of the CBoT?

In Hairspray's defense, this is actually a movie adaptation of the hit Broadway show. So, technically, it's a remake of the musical adaptation of the original show. John Waters, a man who I don't think has ever really sold out, has been involved with all three. Harvey Fierstein played Edna Turnblad in the original Broadway version, so at least that stayed close to Divine's role. I guess I would have enjoyed seeing Nathan Lane as Edna, but oh well.

Hollywood, and Broadway, has always borrowed from each other and the past. There's Legally Blonde, the Musical, Xanadu on Broadway with the tagline "Xanadu on Broadway. Seriously.", and not to mention all the Broadway versions of Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King, and whatever Disney might do. Rocky Horror was redone, with Dick Cavett and Lea Delaria as Eddie/Dr. Scott. And in that YouTube video above of Rocky Horror at the Tonys, one of the dancers tries to get Mel Brooks to dance. He was there because he had just brought the Producers to Broadway. So there's another example of a movie going to Broadway to become a musical and then turned into a movie of the musical.

The Ladykillers, the Manchurian Candidate, Dangerous Liaisons, Willy Wonka. All have been remade. Why, here's a list that Wikipedia had to split into two entries: Titles beginning with A-M and then N-Z.

And if you want to talk about movie adaptations of books, the list gets even longer with all the Harry Potter, James Bond, and Bourne films. Not too mention Nancy Drew. And you can pick lots of other ones.

So, I guess my point, other than proving I'm really gay by wanting to go see Xanadu on Broadway, is that years from now, there will be someone lamenting the remake of some seminal movie (or book or toys) from their childhood. For that, I reference this recent PvP comic strip.

And THATs why I refused to buy the movie when they released it. It was one of my FAVORITE movies as a child. Much the same reason I won't buy the Star Wars DVD's. I want the orginal releases on dvd, not with the special added scenes and shit

Movies from books never bothered me. And remakes that aren't remakes don't bother me as much. charlie and the chocolate factory was made to be closer to the book. Willy wonka is great and has it's own special place in my heart.
